Developmental Assessments
Pediatric hospitals provide developmental screenings and assessments to evaluate a child’s physical, cognitive, language, and social-emotional development. They offer interventions and referrals when developmental delays or concerns are identified.
Developmental assessment of children
At Kiaan Children’s Hospital, we recognize the importance of developmental assessment, which involves evaluating a child’s performance in relation to their peers of similar age. This comparison is made using a representative sample from the child’s population group. Multiple factors contribute to significant variations in performance across different population groups. In a multicultural society, it can be particularly challenging to establish appropriate benchmarks for developmental standards. This article aims to provide an overview of the literature on child development assessment, shedding light on normal developmental parameters, guidelines for assessing a child, and determining when a specialist assessment is necessary. Our goal is to ensure comprehensive support for children and their families throughout their developmental journey.
What is child development?
Development encompasses the transformative journey through which every child transitions from a state of helpless infancy to eventually attaining self-reliance in adulthood.
At Kiaan Children’s Hospital, we acknowledge the profound significance of this developmental process. Our dedicated team is committed to fostering a nurturing environment that supports children at every stage of their growth, ensuring they receive the comprehensive care needed to thrive and flourish on their path toward independent adulthood.
The growth and development of the brain and central nervous system are commonly referred to as psychomotor development, encompassing four primary domains:
- Speech and language
- Social interaction, personal skills, and activities of daily living
- Performance and cognition.
At Kiaan Children’s Hospital, we recognize the significance of these domains in a child’s overall development. Our dedicated team focuses on providing comprehensive support and specialized care to nurture each aspect of psychomotor development, ensuring that children can reach their full potential in all these crucial areas.
