Dental Crowns
Dental crowns, also known as caps, are tooth-shaped coverings that are placed over damaged or weakened teeth to restore their strength, shape, and appearance. Crowns are commonly used to protect a tooth after a root canal procedure or to cover a large filling.
WHAT ARE DENTAL CROWNS?
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are used to restore the shape, size, and appearance of a tooth while also enhancing its strength. When a significant portion of the tooth is missing, a dental crown provides an ideal solution. By placing a crown, the tooth can regain its normal function and appearance.
WHEN IS DENTAL CROWN NEEDED?
A dental crown is needed in various situations, such as:
To protect a weak tooth from fracturing.
To restore a broken or severely worn-down tooth.
To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t much natural tooth structure left.
To hold a dental bridge in place.
To cover a dental implant and replace a missing tooth.
To improve the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth.
To provide additional support for a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment.
Dental crowns can be mainly categorized into two types based on the filling material used: metal with ceramic filling or completely ceramic.
Metal with ceramic filling incorporates materials like nickel chromium, cobalt chromium, or titanium, which are relatively lightweight. On the other hand, completely ceramic crowns/bridges utilize materials such as lithium disilicate or zirconia, resulting in a precise replication of natural teeth.
