Fillings

Dental fillings are used to restore teeth affected by decay or cavities. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed, and the cavity is filled with a suitable material, such as composite resin or amalgam, to restore the tooth’s functionality and appearance.

WHEN DOES ONE NEED DENTAL FILLING?

Fillings may be necessary based on various signs and symptoms, including:

  • A hole in your tooth
  • Dark spots on the tooth
  • Food getting stuck between certain areas of the teeth
  • Chipped or broken tooth
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold food and beverages
  • Presence of single or multiple cavities

Dental filling is typically necessary when a tooth is decayed, as it can prevent further damage and protect the tooth.

The initial step in the process involves assessing the severity of the affected tooth, as dental filling is suitable for minor fractures and decay only. The dentist examines the tooth, and if needed, an X-ray is taken for precise information.

Depending on the extent of decay, local anesthesia is administered to numb the area around the infected tooth. Next, the decayed or damaged part of the tooth or the surrounding areas are prepared for restoration. In the case of damage, a dental handpiece or laser may be used to remove the affected portion.

Subsequently, a filling is applied to the cavity to restore the tooth. The type of filling used varies case by case and person to person.

Finally, the finished tooth is polished to conclude the dental filling procedure.

Dental fillings come in various types, and the selection depends on the decay’s condition and other factors like material allergies. The different types of fillings available are as follows:

Metal Filling: This age-old filling option is highly durable. Silver fillings are relatively inexpensive, but gold, despite being costly, is a preferred choice due to its ability to withstand chewing forces, lasting usually from 10 to 15 years.

Amalgam Filling: These fillings have been extensively researched and widely used by dental professionals for a long time. They consist of a combination of several metals, resulting in high strength.

Composite Filling: Composite fillings match the color of your teeth, making them an ideal choice if you don’t want the filling to be visible. They are recommended and suitable for front teeth and bond well with the tooth structure. They are also used for chipped teeth but have a shorter lifespan compared to metal and amalgam fillings and may wear off over time.

Porcelain / Ceramic Filling: Porcelain fillings are perfect for addressing serious aesthetic concerns. They cover a significant portion of the tooth and can be used when the decay is extensive. This long-lasting filling does not easily stain or wear off.
