Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatments, such as braces or aligners, are offered to correct misaligned teeth and bite issues. These treatments help improve dental aesthetics, functionality, and overall oral health.
Does orthodontic treatment cause pain?
The process of fitting braces is generally not painful. For fixed appliances, the brackets are simply attached to the surfaces of the teeth, and metal bands may be cemented around the back teeth. Some discomfort may arise during the band placement, leading to mild aching and tenderness in the gums as the teeth begin to shift. However, these sensations typically subside after a few days.
As the biological processes kick in and the teeth start to move, you may experience some additional aching and tenderness when biting down. This discomfort usually resolves within a few days, though some individuals may have mild tenderness for a longer period. If needed, taking regular painkillers for a day or two can be beneficial. Subsequent adjustments to the braces may cause some further discomfort, but the level of discomfort varies based on the specific adjustments made. Overall, the discomfort associated with orthodontic treatment is generally manageable and temporary.
Fixed appliances, commonly known as braces, continue to be the most popular type of orthodontic treatment. They are available in various types, such as metal (stainless steel) and ceramic (tooth-colored) braces, which are typically affixed to the front of the teeth. Lingual braces are also available, which are fitted to the back of the teeth for a more discreet appearance.
On the other hand, removable appliances, also referred to as braces, offer another approach to orthodontic treatment. This category includes removable aligners, functional appliances, as well as conventional wire and plastic braces designed for simple and limited tooth movement. Aligners are clear plastic appliances that can be taken off and gradually shift the teeth into the desired position. Functional appliances, on the other hand, are mainly used to promote jaw harmony and alignment.
