Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is performed to save a severely decayed or infected tooth. During the procedure, the infected pulp is removed from the tooth’s root canal, and the space is filled with a dental material. This helps alleviate pain and prevents the need for tooth extraction.

When is a Root Canal Treatment Required?

At times, bacteria can infiltrate the pulp of a tooth, leading to an infection. In such cases, the tooth requires root canal therapy to be preserved. This procedure involves the removal of the infected pulp and the subsequent sealing of the tooth to prevent any chances of reinfection.

Root Canal Treatment (RCT), also referred to as Endodontic Treatment, is performed when tooth decay reaches the pulp, resulting in inflammation. It is crucial to save the compromised tooth from extraction. An Endodontist, who specializes in Root Canal procedures, carries out this treatment. The procedure entails:

  1. Elimination of inflamed or infected tooth material
  2. Thorough cleaning and disinfection
  3. Filling and sealing with an inert material
  4. Restoration and application of a crown/cap.

What is the reason for undergoing Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment is conducted on a tooth that is either damaged or infected. Infections can arise from various factors such as a cracked or broken tooth, deep decay, gum diseases, or repeated dental procedures on the same tooth. The significance of getting Root Canal Treatment lies in the following aspects:

  1. It halts the spread of infection, thereby preserving the tooth and preventing extraction.
  2. RCT effectively alleviates the pain caused by inflammation.

Indications

The primary indicator that Root Canal Treatment might be necessary is experiencing a toothache, which can vary in intensity from mild to severe and may exacerbate over time, even causing pain when biting down on food.

Another potential reason is prolonged sensitivity, where you feel discomfort in your tooth when consuming hot or cold substances, indicating the possibility of requiring Root Canal Treatment.

Additionally, swelling in the gums can also be an indication that Root Canal Treatment is needed.
