Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening procedures are available to brighten and enhance the color of natural teeth. These treatments help remove stains and discoloration caused by factors like aging, certain foods and beverages, smoking, or poor oral hygiene.
Why is teeth whitening necessary?
Tooth discoloration can occur due to staining of the enamel, which reflects the natural color of your tooth, or the dentin, the inner surface of teeth that can stain and yellow your teeth. The causes of tooth discoloration are varied, and while some can be prevented, others are beyond control. The factors contributing to discoloration include:
Frequent consumption of tea, coffee, wine, and cola.
Smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco.
High fluoride intake during childhood.
Damage to developing permanent teeth due to accidents or trauma.
Aging, which can lead to thinner enamel exposing the dentin below. The dentin can get stained when it comes into contact with certain food and beverages.
Certain medical treatments can also contribute to tooth staining.
How does teeth whitening work?
The teeth whitening procedure begins with your dentist photographing your teeth, which helps track the treatment’s progress and examine any stains present.
After examining your teeth, the dentist will start by cleaning them, removing any film on the enamel caused by the food you eat or other substances. The actual whitening process commences after the cleaning. The duration of the entire process typically ranges from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the severity of the stains on your teeth.
Next, the dentist will protect your gums and apply the whitening agent to your teeth. Some whitening agents may require the use of laser lights, and if your teeth are heavily stained, your dentist may recommend continuing the process at home for a few days.
Alternatively, you have the option of a home whitening treatment, where your dentist takes an impression of your teeth and creates a custom-fit mouthpiece. This ensures the whitening agent stays in place on your teeth effectively.
For teeth that are not heavily stained, over-the-counter whitening products are available as another option.
